Summer Holiday Makeup: What to bring

When packing for a holiday one of the most deliberating questions you ask yourself is “what makeup do I take?”. How do you prevent yourself from taking too much or too little? How can you downsize so that it’s portable and you can take it in a small makeup bag?

These questions will be revealed within this blog post. Being a makeup artist, you need to be prepared for the most challenging of tasks, which includes packing and downsizing your makeup bag.

Not only do you want your makeup downsized, but you also want to make sure you take what you need! There’s nothing worse than rummaging through tonnes of makeup only to go back to the same, easy to apply products so you can enjoy the rest of your day out in the sun! I have mentioned some products in this post which are quick and easy to apply on the good and compact enough to fit in your handbag, giving an idea of what you do and don’t need!

I have incorporated both low end and high end products so that there is a fit for all out there. However, I do like to be frugal and get the best bargain for my buck so don’t be surprised if you do see a lot of drugstore brands in this post!

First and foremost, the most asked question. Foundation.

I’m going to be honest, foundation alone will not withstand 12 hours of constant heat. It just won’t. Even if it’s the most magical foundation in the world. It will melt. However, that won’t stop some people trying! Below there will be advice and suggestions for what foundations you should bring, along with products you can pair with it to make it last longer. You should always look for a foundation that is oil free when bringing it to wear in a hot climate, and stay away from cream foundation products if you can!

Foundation

First of all I want to say that I personally do not recommend wearing a medium/heavy coverage foundation in hot weather conditions, as it can be too heavy and uncomfortable. If you really cannot go without it, here are a couple of suggestions. These suggestions below are transfer proof and can withstand a certain amount of heat without sweating off.

Powder Foundation

The great thing about powder foundations is that they soak up excess oil in your skin and less likely to slide off of your face because of the texture. There are a few powder foundations that I have spotted, as well as the iconic Bare Minerals Original.

Compact Foundation

Compact foundations are great for fitting in your bag or purse on a day out to touch up your makeup. These, however, aren’t recommended as they are cream based, but never the less they are great and lightweight for carrying around if cream foundation is your preferred choice. There’s a couple of great finds below.

Tinted moisturiser

Tinted moisturiser is great for bringing on holiday! It is a lightweight formula that gives you very subtle coverage, evening out your skin whilst moisturising any dry patches from the sun. Not only that, but it will not “melt off” as it is such a lightweight formula anyway. I highly recommend tinted moisturisers as they give you that subtle, healthy glow whilst not looking obvious. Examples of tinted moisturisers below.

BB cream

If you feel like you need a little bit more coverage than a tinted moisturiser, then a BB cream is another great option. BB creams blur imperfections and give you a healthier looking glow. Again, the formula is a moisturising, lightweight formula but adds extra benefits as opposed to your tinted moisturiser, such as slightly heavier coverage to even out your skin more effectively.

Bronzer

Bronzer is great to use instead of foundation, ensuring to give you a healthy glow without clogging your pores or melting off! These below are some great buys.

Powder

Powders are great, especially if it’s to set a cream product on your face. You only need a tiny bit for touch ups and reducing shine and absorbing oil.

Waterproof mascara

Great advice would be to get semi permanent lashes. Some people get their eyelashes tinted which is highly recommended. However, some of us are not blessed with naturally curled, lengthy eyelashes and need a little boost, and do not want the hassle of wearing semi permanents!

Waterproof mascara is a must. You do not want to bring your normal every day mascara, just leave it at home no matter how great it is, please. Just do not take it. The last thing you want is picture evidence of panda eyes and mascara running down your cheeks! When I went on holiday, I used my waterproof mascara every day and it did not budge! I was in the swimming pool, the sea, blasted with a hose of water and even went diving and my mascara still stayed in place!

Liquid Liner

If you like your eyes bold, especially on a night out then these products will be great to compliment your look! The easy pen like applicator makes it quick and simple to swipe some on then go on with the rest of your day, as well as being waterproof to tackle any running lines down the face! They also come in a range of shades if black isn’t your colour.

Neutral Eyeshadow Palette

Most of you will think you need to pack every single eyeshadow palette with every single shade of blue! No, you don’t. Believe me. Been there, done that, realised how completely unnecessary it was. You wont use it. A neutral, muted eyeshadow palette is all you will need with a few eyepopping colours to mix’n’match if you get bored. It would be great for you to get one with both matte and shimmer shades so that you have plenty of choice. The great thing about neutral eyeshadows is that you will still look glam and the muted tones will harmonize with any other makeup you wear and match all of your outfits. If you really have to, the Naked Palette from Urban Decay or Chocolate Bar from Toofaced have good selection of colours to keep you entertained for the holiday. However, as these are bulky and expensive to replace, I would recommend something like Sleek or MUA as these are compact, cheap to replace if you lose it and have 12 colours to play and experiment with.

Eye Primer

Eye primer is not a necessity if you don’t plan on wearing any eyeshadow! You can also double up your concealer as an eye primer if you don’t want to carry the extra weight. These are great eye primers if you are planning on wearing eyeshadow, it will give you that extra glitz and glam!

2 in 1 products

2 in 1 products are a great way to minimize what is in your makeup bag. These 2 in 1 products are usually very compact, coming in small cyllinder shaped containers, a small circular compact or a pen. I had a nosey around my local Boots and Debenhams store and sought out the best bargains for your buck.

pop and glow no7

Pop & Glow No7. Sunrise Glow & Sunset Glow £9.95.

The sunrise glow is for more porclain skin, with an opaque shimmery highlight on one side, and a rosy pink blush on the other. Depending on how well you tan you can definitely get away with bringing along the sunset glow which encompasses a golden highlight and a rose coloured blush. I love this product! You can use it as a highlighter, blush, lip tint and shimmery eyeshadow. Its creamy texture makes it easy to blend with your fingers, making it easy to use and blend anywhere on your face. Talk about multitasking!

concealer powder

MUA Pro-Base Concealer Powder £4

This gem has every colour concealer you need to conceal redness, fatigue, dark circles and sallow skin as well as help you brighten up your face! Extra bonus is that it’s a powder, so you don’t have to worry about it melting off your face!

sculptandhighlightfaceduo_main

NYX Face Duo Sculpt & Highlight £9. Comes in 4 different shades!

If you really can’t live without your contour, then you will love this nifty buy! Coming in a pen like applicator, one side is a highlight shade, the other is a contouring shade. The great thing about this is you can draw the contour and highlight where you want it and then blend it in easily with your fingers!

17 lets face it

17 Lets Face It Palette £5.99

Setting powder and cream blush, along with a pink toned and peach toned concealer and a dual ended application and mirror. Your perfect compact!

Gel tints are great to use on holiday. Once it’s on, it won’t budge! This 2 in 1 product is an absolute steal at only £4.99, giving you a subtle hint of colour to compliment your tan (fake or real, I ain’t judging). If you want a more premium product, Dior and Benefit also do it!

Blusher and bronzer combos are the best ones! I scouted Debenhams in search for a couple, if you are a premium girl then you will love these premium products! Also comes in a beautiful compact so you can check your reflection anytime you want.

chubbystick

Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Stain £19.

This great product comes in 4 colours! Contrary to the name, you can use this as a cheek and a lip stain!

Liquid Concealer

Liquid concealers are great, as you can use them to cover dark circles and blemishes without covering your whole face. This is particularly great when you’re on holiday, as it gives you the confidence you need without your face completely melting in the process. Liquid concealers will last longer than cream concealers because they set and dry in themselves without having to use a powder. There are a selection of liquid concealers out there that will do the job for you.

Brow Gel

Brow gel is great as it is quick, easy to use and efficient. You literally just need to brush it through your brows and BOOM. Sorted. Your brows are fixed in place and slightly fuller (if using a tinted brow gel).

Setting Spray

Setting spray isn’t really essential unless you are planning on wearing a full face of makeup every day. However, setting spray is a lifesaver for nights out and heavier makeup, so it is worth bringing if you are planning on painting your face for a few cocktails. There’s an array of setting sprays you can choose from which also come in compact bottles, such as Nyx Matte Setting Spray, Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray and Green Marble.

Lip Crayon

I love my chubby lip crayons from bourjois paris, similar to lip tints, they are so quick and easy to apply. They make my lips look healthy and glossy without having a sticky residue, giving them a semi opaque colour and coming in a range of shades to choose from. At £7.99 they are amazing, lasting a long time and gives the moisture that your lips will need. Unlike lipsticks, you don’t have to fiddle about twisting it up and losing the lid, you literally just pop off the lid, swipe it over your lips, put the lid back on and viola, back it goes in your bag!

Tinted Lip Moisturiser

Last thing you want is dry, cracked lips. The sun will do just that if you do not moisturise them! What better way to do that than with a tinted lip moisturiser, giving your lips a sheer, healthy colour with a little bit of shine, as well as keeping them moisturised and protected from the sun. A great lip moisturiser is Nivea Lip Balm. If you wanted a more vibrant colour, Lush do long lasting lip stains with the added bonus of cocoa butter to replenish and add an extra boost of moisture to the lips.

Brushes

I saw a bargain in my local Boots store the other day and I just had to share! Brushes are again not a necessity, but for those who don’t like using their fingers to apply their makeup, these are great! Ecotools have the added bonus of being cruelty free! This set includes a powder brush, foundation brush, eyeshadow brush, lip brush and brow/liner brush.

lovely looks

Ecotools Lovely Looks £11.99

Makeup Wipes

You can literally get makeup wipes anywhere from poundland, home bargains, bodycare and your local boots. These are imperative to take off your makeup if it’s irritating you, or if you just can’t be bothered fully washing your face at night.

Blotting Paper

To prevent yourself from looking shiny, blotting papers are great. You don’t have to walk around wondering if your face is shiny. They are as compact as tissues and take the shine away from your face. Blotting papers you can get basically anywhere.

We have reached the end of my post. Before I go, I just want to say to you girls. A lot of people don’t wear much makeup on holiday, so don’t worry too much about what to bring! The items listed above are just some ideas of what you can take without cluttering your makeup bag.

If you enjoyed this post and took something from it, please let me know! If you think I have forgotten something or have something to add, feel free to comment your feedback and opinions. There will shortly be a post on what skincare to take with you in the sun!

Thank you for reading.
